Mattel Recall of Chinese Toys Will Cost $30 Million

Aug. 2 (Bloomberg) -- Mattel Inc., the world's largest toymaker, said a recall of 1.5 million Chinese-made products will reduce second-quarter operating income by almost 50 percent and that it will review the production methods of all its contractors in China.
The recall of toys, including Sesame Street dolls, that may contain excessive lead levels will cut $30 million from Mattel's previously reported operating income of $63.5 million. The company didn't say what the impact on net income would be.
The lead discovery might force Mattel to find new sources of low-cost goods and may further damage China's reputation as an exporter, following a recall of ``Thomas & Friends'' toys, a U.S. ban on Chinese toothpaste and scandals involving tainted cooking oil and diseased pork.
``Mattel has for many years been a leader in product safety,'' said Sean McGowan, an analyst at Wedbush Morgan Securities in New York. ``This serves as a reminder that even the most diligent companies are vulnerable to the materials that get supplied to their factories.''

Mattel stopped production and shipping of the affected toys and began an investigation around July 7, Walter said in an interview. Two-thirds of the affected toys never hit store shelves, according to company spokeswoman Lisa Marie Bongiovanni.

MASONVILLE, Colo. - Zoey is a Chihuahua, but when a rattlesnake lunged at her owners’ 1-year-old grandson, she was a real bulldog.
Booker West was splashing his hands in a birdbath in his grandparents’ northern Colorado back yard when the snake slithered up to the toddler, rattled and struck. Five-pound Zoey jumped in the way and took the bites.
“She got in between Booker and the snake, and that’s when I heard her yipe,” Monty Long, the boy’s grandfather, said Thursday.

The dog required treatment and for a time it appeared she might not survive. Now she prances about.

No models under 16 in Britain

A British fashion industry inquiry has determined that girls under the age of sixteen should not be allowed to model clothing. The chairwoman of the panel, Baroness Kingsmill, said it was "profoundly inappropriate" for young girls to be dressed up like adults.

The Baroness said that panel members became "increasingly concerned" about the conditions teen models endured as well as their vulnerability in the unregulated and unmonitored business. "We have been given startling medical evidence about the prevalence and impact of eating disorders in certain high-risk industries," she said. The panel called for scientific study of the eating disorders in the industry.She also noted that "the risk of sexualising these children was high and designers could risk charges of sexual exploitation." All in all, the recommendation is to keep girls under 16 off the catwalks. The British Fashion Council has said they will follow the council's final recommendations when they are published in September.

Product Recall: Gerber Organic Rice and Oatmeal Cereals

Gerber Products Company, a division of Novartis Consumer Health, is voluntarily recalling all packages of their organic rice and oatmeal cereals due to a potential choking risk. Some of the cereal may contain lumps which do not dissolve and on which a child could choke. Gerber has received reports of choking, but luckily no one has suffered any injuries.

These cereals are sold in eight ounce packages and all codes are being recalled. If you have some, do not use it. Instead, call the Gerber Parents Resource Center 1-800-443-7237 or 1-231-928-3000 to return the product and receive a full refund.

What a mess....

Almost 24 hours later and Ebay has still not been able to get the groups in order. The emails keep coming in, but I have NO control over the madness. The funny part is how everyone wants to see the new change and is dying to get in and talk to the friend and colleagues.

Alvin and the Chipmunks is Coming...

Ok Now even though we grew up with the Chipmunks...I'm sure your kids have song along to there Christmas songs....this will be fun to see around the Christmas Holidays!!

The film is based on the 1950s cartoon series about chipmunks Alvin, Simon and Theodore, who lay waste to Seville's surroundings and sing in three-part harmony. 20th Century Fox will release the Tim Hill-directed pic on December 14.
